ABOUT US

Early History

The Old Essendon Grammarians Cricket Club was formed by Steve Kendall in 1967. Steve a past student was teaching at the Essendon Grammar Junior School at the time he entered a team in the Essendon Broadmeadows Keilor Cricket Association. The EBKCA was a matting competition at this time and after several years Steve had ambitions of entering a turf competition. This ambition was made possible when PEGS purchased land at Keilor East with plans for the development of 3 ovals. Steve obtained school approval and organised the laying of Merri Creek soil up at the then new Keilor East campus. Steve’s year 7 Science students were commandeered soon after to lay the couch runners on the bare turf. It must be mentioned that the School Principal at the time Bert Stevens a great visionary and supporter of sport, particularly cricket gave great support to the Club.

In 1975/76 the club joined the Victorian Junior Cricket Association (all turf competition) and won its first flag in North B under Bob McClennan an ex- Australian Hockey player and veteran of over 1oo District Games. Bob was also in charge of the School facilities for many years. The following year the club was promoted to North A in which the OEGCC performed well and during this time the club increased to three teams. After some very close but unsuccessful attempts to win the North A competition and gain promotion to Senior Division the club under President David Pitkin achieved a recruitment coup, attracting ex – Australian player Les Joslin to the club. Combining with some other senior players (such as AFL legends Neville Fields and Dennis Pagan) and some talented young ex – Students the club experienced a fabulously successful era. The club had to win two premierships in North A winning flags in 1982/3 and 1983/4 to gain promotion to Senior Division being defeated in the semi-final in the first year. The club then went on to win the next two Senior Division Premierships in 1984/85 & 1986/87.

The full playing history can be followed in the Club’s Almanac, which is linked here: https://www.pegscc.com.au/s/PEGSCC-Almanac-2023-24.pdf

Club Purpose

The PEGSCC (formally OEGCC) was formed primarily to provide those students with a love for cricket an opportunity to continue playing with their school mates on leaving PEGS. While players of all standard are welcome the aim has always been to provide players the opportunity to play at the highest possible standard in the VTCA and to be as competitive as possible in all grades in which the club competes. Despite being an “old boys” club from conception the PEGS CC has warmly welcomed any player and their friends and families that wish to join the club and indeed many who have joined us from outside the school community have been our greatest contributors. The overriding aim of PEGSCC is to create a friendly, fair and inclusive supportive community club. The values and ideals associated with unconditional friendship, care and support for players and their friends and families have always run a close second to actual training and match day participation in the life of the club. In the 2013/2014 the club formed under age teams for the first time. The aim of this expansion is to strengthen the club in the areas of field performance and administration as well as increasing the diversity and numbers of club members. In addition the inclusion of a junior program will facilitate a closer and mutually advantageous relationship with the school.

Current

PEGSCC play on two ovals located at the PEGS Sporting facility, 127 Wright Rd. Keilor Park. We currently field four senior teams, three in the VTCA and one in the Sunday MCC one day competition. In addition we have junior teams in all age groups.
